Organisers of the Back to School tournament have resolved to resume the junior tennis tournament on Wednesday.

The action was meant to conclude on Sunday but harsh weather conditions over the weekend left the courts at Port Royal wet and slippery, forcing the committee in charge to halt the matches.

Plans to resume the tournament, sponsored by AXA Insurance, on Tuesday were also not successful due to heavy rain.

“We’re going to push ahead to try and get the matches played throughout the week,’’ said Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president.

“We literally have just nine matches left to play, three of them are continuation matches from Saturday when it rained.

“We will start matches on Wednesday at 4.15pm at Port Royal Tennis Courts and then we’ll have another round of matches at 5pm. The following day, we’ll try and play the remaining three matches.

“Weather permitting, hopefully we can finish this tournament on Thursday as we are starting to run into conflicts with the children’s other commitments.

“Looking at the weather forecast, we should have better weather on Wednesday. We’ll see what we can do to have this tournament completed.”

On Wednesday, Manuel Maldonado and Hassan Khan clash in the boys under-14 round-robin. On another court at the same time, Lee Terceira and Arianna Parra Delgado are scheduled to do battle in the girls under-14 round-robin.

The third encounter starting at 4.15pm is between Ella Metschnabel and Chloe McBrearty in the girls under-12 division. McBrearty has another fixture at 5pm against Parra Delgado in the same age group.

Maldonado meets Michael Mohipp in the boys under-14 competition, while in a similar age group for the girls, Terceira takes on Dylan Outerbridge.
