An award-winning Bermudian documentary photographer and visual storyteller is offering a preview into her eight-year photographic journey examining Bermuda’s rich and complex heritage.

Nicola Muirhead will show Descendants of Summer: A Preview, part of a project that is still in development, in the Rick Faries Gallery at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art from October 4.

Among the iconic figures featured in the show are Veronica Chameau, from the St David’s Islanders and Native Community; and Michael Bradshaw, from the Bermuda Friendly Society Association.

Ms Muirhead said: “The work investigates the legacies of our island community, exploring the stories of our heroes and heroines, our ghosts and demons, and ultimately the tales that bind us — unpacking the diverse narratives that make up place and identity in Bermuda.

“At its core, the project seeks to preserve the oral histories of essential memory keepers of our island, ensuring important testimonies related to our past are documented and shared for future generations through visual storytelling.

“The project is still in development and the exhibition is a teaser of my ongoing work.

“Inspired by Graham Foster’s mural Hall of History, I use the camera to capture the threads of our history in the present day, documenting various locations and recording testimonials of living descendants, iconic figures and culture bearers of our island’s past and present.”

In collaboration with local artists, activists, political figures, historians and environmental conservationists from the island, the exhibition offers a glimpse into Ms Muirhead’s expansive work, captured in a range of media including experimental film, digital photography, archival images, video, artefacts and interviews – a sample of which will be included in the exhibition.

Ms Muirhead, a former photographer with The Royal Gazette, added: “Together, these elements shed light on the multifaceted realities that have shaped our unique microcosm in the Atlantic.”

The exhibition will have an accompanying website that can only be accessed through a QR code available at the gallery space.

The website will provide further information regarding the project and the people featured in the work, described by Ms Muirhead as “vital collaborators” to the ongoing series.

Ms Muirhead hopes the collection will be the beginning of many more iterations of the work in exhibitions across the island and overseas.

Ms Muirhead has a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a minor in conflict resolution. She finished her master’s degree in documentary photography and photojournalism at the University of the Arts London in January 2017. She is mostly based between London and Bermuda.

Her work has been published in publications and platforms including Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, the BBC, The Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic and The Guardian.

She is also the winner of multiple photographic awards and contributes as a visiting lecturer and educator in photography.

The public is invited to the opening reception on October 4, from 5.30pm to 7pm. The exhibition will be available for viewing until October 29.

There will also be an artist talk on October 10 from 5.30pm to 7pm.
