MarketPlace prepared for US port strike
The island’s largest grocery retailer, The MarketPlace, said tonight it has proactively implemented comprehensive plans to safeguard its operations and customer service in light of a potential strike by the International Longshoremen's Association.
The strike, which could affect shipping from the Port Elizabeth terminal in New Jersey to Bermuda, is set to begin on October 1 if a labour agreement is not reached.
“We have been closely monitoring this situation for many months and have implemented robust contingency plans,” said Seth Stutzman, president of The MarketPlace.
“Our proactive approach ensures that we are fully prepared to maintain uninterrupted service across all our stores. We are committed to keeping our shelves stocked with fresh produce and essential items, minimising any potential disruption to our valued customers throughout Bermuda.”
Mr Stutzman continued: “The MarketPlace has successfully navigated challenging times before, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as we persevered then, we are confident in our ability to manage through this potential disruption.
“Our team is working tirelessly not only to maintain our supply chain but also to keep prices as low as possible for our customers, despite rising costs globally."
“We are grateful for the co-operation and hard work of all our partners during this time. This includes the local shipping lines, freight services, stevedores, and both local and overseas wholesalers.“
