A mouth-watering contest is in store this afternoon at White Hill Field when Bailey’s Bay collide with St George’s in the semi-finals of the Athene T20 Knockout Cup.

Bay, who finished on top of the standings when the single round-robin concluded last Sunday, have a chance to pick up another T20 trophy. For St George’s, it is an opportunity to get the better of a side that denied them a fourth consecutive T20 title.

Also battling for a spot in the final are Somerset and Cleveland County, who face off at Lord’s in the other semi-final. The winners of the two matches will meet in tomorrow’s decider on North Field.

St George’s coach Clay Smith declared that they will treat the match against Bay as a final.

“This is our final,’’ Smith told The Royal Gazette. “At the end of the day we’re just looking to close out the season on a high.

“If you look at it, these are two of the best teams playing against each other in the semi-finals. We’re going to everything to try and win the trophy, I’m sure Bay are trying to do the same.

“Every time there’s a trophy to be played for, if we can win, we’ll do everything in our power to win it. We’re not looking past Bay, we have to take it one game at a time.

The East Enders head into the match missing three key players. Abdul Salam and Sinclair Smith are off the island, with Oronde Bascome still out injured.

“We’re still piecing together a team to make sure that we can be competitive,’’ the St George’s coach said.

“We have a few players out injured and others are off island. We’re trying to make the best out of the end of the season with the players that are at our disposal.

“We’ll utilise some of our Commercial League players to try and make up the numbers. It’s up to the regular players to step up to the plate and make a difference.”

Gus Logie, the Bay coach, is delighted to have captain Terry Fray, Rodney Trott and Kyle Hodsoll back for this weekend’s matches. The three are expected to combine well with Coolidge Durham, Jarryd Richardson, Delray Rawlins and Azendé Furbert.

“Most of our players that were off island are back and we’re close to our full squad,’’ Logie said.

“The players have expressed their willingness and desire to finish the season on a high, and that’s all we can ask for at this stage.

“We’ll go one game at a time. We know what we’re up against, hopefully, we’ll be able to compete and come out on top.

“I think the hunger will be on both sides, it all depends on who’s hungrier to win it. We’ve spoken to the players, and we’re all on the same page at this point in time.

“I think the players know what’s at stake. This is the last trophy for the year and they would want to win another piece of silverware.”

St David’s, the First Division champions, face Willow Cuts for a spot in tomorrow’s final. The other semi-final is between Flatts and Devonshire Rec, with the winners of those two fixtures to play as curtain-raisers when the season concludes tomorrow.
