Charity walk for injured teen hailed as success
Friends and supporters of an injured young musical artist gathered at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club this morning to raise money to support his recovery.
More than 100 people signed up in advance for the second annual family fun walk, run and roll to benefit Zhamir Denbrook-Pitt, while even more signed up to take part on the spot.
Mr Denbrook-Pitt, a promising young artist, suffered a spinal injury on July 26 last year when he crashed in St David’s on his way home from cricket trials.
Since then, his family and friends have come together with the goal of raising £210,000 to support his recovery.
Rheba Simmons, his aunt, said she was pleased by the turnout, stating: “We had about 110 registrations before today and we have had at least 20 registrations this morning so far.
“The campaign is going well. We have a lot of supporters who came last year and have continue to support us now. Everyone is on our team, helping and just being there to support emotionally.”
She added that while Mr Denbrook-Pitt is still receiving rehabilitation for his injuries, his spirits remain high.
“The support that everyone is showing is keeping him going,” she said. “He is in rehab, trying to get better, but it is a long journey.”
Ms Simmons said that the campaign has garnered support from across the island, and more events are in the planning.
“We are having a golf tournament on October 19 at Mid Ocean Golf Club, something a little different for a different crowd,” she said.
“That also had a good turnout last year, and we are hoping for the same this year.”
