Fresh numbers on the island’s stock of government-owned affordable housing were delivered in the House of Assembly on Friday by Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister.

Colonel Burch said “there had been some confusion” about the amount of housing, adding that the Bermuda Housing Corporation had 710 units in total.

Of these, 167 are to be renovated — 101 of which are occupied, and 66 of which are deemed “vacant and derelict”.

Colonel Burch told MPs that, of the 167 units in need of refurbishment, 68 had been completed — with 38 occupied and 30 vacant.

He explained: “The 68 units completed thus far comprise 11 studio units, 13 one-bedroom units, seven two-bedroom units, seven three-bedroom units and three four-bedroom units.”

The minister said that left 99 units “in various stages of progress”, with the next cohort of projects including 31 brand-new units either under construction or awaiting building permits.

The new housing consists of 12 units at Harmony Terrace East in Paget, 12 units at 18 Battery Road in St David’s, five units at the Chelsea Apartments in St George’s and two units at Middle Town Terrace in Pembroke.

Colonel Burch said: “The remaining 68 units are in various stages of the planning process, and will be advanced as the building permits are received.”
