A total of seven troupes will feature in the flagship event of this year’s Bermuda Gombey Festival weekend, senators heard today.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, said that the showcase on October 26 at the Botanical Gardens was about “community, unity and joy”.

He said: “The main event will feature the artistry of not just one, but seven active Gombey troupes.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Gombey Evolution Troupe, Gombey Warriors, H & H Gombeys, Place’s Gombeys, and the Warwick Gombey Troupe.

“Additionally, we are excited to introduce two new participants who will be joining the festival for the very first time — Phoenix Gombeys and Vibe Tribe Gombeys.

“The diversity of styles and expressions within these groups is a testament to the dynamic and evolving nature of the Gombey tradition.

“Each troupe brings its unique flavour and flair to the performance, showcasing how the art of the Gombey continues to grow.”

Mr Darrell said that a fun castle will also be at the free event as well as island vendors who will offer “an assortment of goods”.

He said that the festival weekend, hosted by the Department of Culture, will include other events "that capture the spirit of Gombey unity“.

The minister added: “On Friday, October 25, we will launch the Gombey Unity short film, an inspiring documentary directed by Qian Dickinson and produced by the department’s cultural programme manager Carlita Lodge.

“This short film explores the theme of unity within the Gombey community, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the artistry, commitment and sense of togetherness that fuels the Gombey tradition.

“The film will be made available on the department’s YouTube channel, Bermuda Culture.”

Senators heard that on October 27 — also the showcase’s rain date — a Chewstick open mike jam session will provide a space for the Gombey community to connect “behind the mask”.

Mr Darrell said: “It’s an opportunity to share music, poetry and creativity in a more intimate setting, fostering the bonds that make our cultural traditions strong.”

He added that the Gombeys in the Gardens Community Art Programme mural project will also continue during the festival.

The minister said: “This initiative is an extension of the Gombey Festival, creating a lasting visual tribute to the artistic spirit of the Gombey.”

He added: “The Bermuda Gombey Festival Weekend is a powerful reminder of the cultural richness that we hold in our hearts and history.

“The Gombey is more than just music and dance; it is an expression of freedom, identity and community.

“It tells the stories of our ancestors and celebrates the spirit of our people, past, present and future.”

Mr Darrell said: “By coming together to support and enjoy this festival, we are honouring our heritage and nurturing a tradition that continues to inspire and unite us.”

Poor weather ultimately meant the showcase event was cancelled last year.

It was originally scheduled to take place on October 7, 2023 but the date was pushed back over concerns about the potential impact of Tropical Storm Philippe.

Organisers later announced that the event would take place October 19, but the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport decided to push the event back to November 4, citing forecasts of inclement weather.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Culture said earlier that the annual event required significant resources and infrastructure that cannot be set up in harsh weather.
