A new initiative to help the public become familiar with the mental health profession is to reframe the meaning of “psyched out”.

Therapeutic speed dating will help people get to know psychologists and matters related to mental health in a flash information session.

It will be followed by a panel discussion led by Bermuda’s top mental health experts.

Jana Outerbridge, of Mayvera, and Chardonae Rawlins, of Simply Bloom, created the event as a way to deepen the public’s understanding of the profession.

Dr Outerbridge said they hoped to use it to redefine the term “psyched out” from meaning “overwhelmed” to a more positive definition.

“Our goal is to show that you can be PsychedOut in a healthy and productive way,” she explained.

“It’s about tapping into your mental strength, gaining insight and understanding that mental healthcare is not something to fear but something that can provide healing and strength.”

The duo will involve many people from Bermuda’s mental health sector to ensure a wide range of topics are accurately covered.

Support will be aimed at children, adults and workplace environments.

It is also intended to be the start of a broader movement to spread information about mental health and improve resources on the island.

Ms Rawlins said: “We want to show Bermuda that mental health services are available and that there is a wealth of tools, workshops and counselling services that can support individuals at every stage of life.

“From children to adults and even professional settings, mental health matters. It’s crucial for overall wellbeing.”

The event will take place on October 10 at the Sammy Wilson Community Centre on Angle Street between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
