Warning over scam caller impersonating police
The public have been warned to be vigilant after residents received fake calls purporting to come from a police officer and attempting to get personal information.
Police said the caller identification shows the Bermuda Police Service with the BPS crest.
Some calls were from phone number +92320 9853 029 with the BPS crest, while others came from an unknown number.
The caller, said to have a Caribbean accent, claims to be a police officer but refuses to provide a police badge number.
The BPS advised that officers will “at no time contact you requesting personal information over the phone”, but will instead ask the recipient to attend a police station at a specific time and date to be spoken with.
Officers contacting the public will also identify themselves by their rank, badge number, name and department.
Anyone receiving the phishing call should challenge the other party by asking that they provide their name and badge number.
If they refuse to provide that information, the recipient should hang up and contact the BPS at 211 or 295-0011 to make a report.
Should the caller provide a name or badge number but continue to ask for personal details, callers are advised to inform them they would prefer to attend a police station and speak with an officer there, then hang up and call the BPS to report the matter.
