Bermudian art on display in Brussels
The works of three Bermudian artists have been put on display at the Brussels Office of the Government.
It comes on the five-year anniversary marking the opening of the office to strengthen ties between the island and the European Union, the Government said.
The art initiative was announced in the 2018 Throne Speech and was aimed at showcasing local talent while providing Bermudian creatives with a platform to share their work with the community.
Pieces on display at in the Brussels Office capture Bermuda’s environment, culture and heritage.
They are A Bermuda Kettle of Fish, by Graham Foster, Strelitzia, by Lulu Hedstrom, and Looka De Gombeys, by Shanna Hollis.
The Government said: “These three artworks capture the spirit, culture and beauty of Bermuda, which can now be enjoyed by everyone that comes to visit the Brussels Office.”
It added that the Belgium-based office and the Department of Culture worked together on the project.
Aliyyah Ahad, the head of European Affairs and Policy in the Brussels Office, said: “These pieces do an excellent job of capturing the colour, motifs and vibrancy of the island.
“Bermuda has so many talented artists who deserve international recognition, and I’m delighted that the Brussels Office can take this initial step in celebrating and showcasing some of this talent.
“I look forward to finding other avenues to share Bermuda’s culture and creativity in Brussels and around the EU.”
Kim Dismont-Robinson, the director of the Department of Culture, added: “We’re grateful to the Brussels Office for providing this platform to highlight the talents of these three Bermudian artists.
“Graham Foster, Lulu Hedstrom and Shanna Hollis are excellent artistic ambassadors, and we’re so pleased they agreed to share their work on this international stage.”
Dr Dismont-Robinson said the initiative also advanced the island’s National Cultural Heritage Policy by ensuring that aspects of Bermuda culture are embedded into everyday life.
David Burt, the Premier, formally marked the Brussels Office’s five-year milestone with a reception during a visit to Europe last month.
The office provides “vital monitoring” of EU policy developments with implications for Bermuda, the Government said.
