A local theatre company is set to bid adieu to its latest run of shows with a free performance tomorrow.

The Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company launched its musical version of The Tempest last month with performances at Rosewood Bermuda, Fort St Catherine, Clearwater Beach and in schools.

A spokesman said the show received rave reviews, with attendees calling it an “incredible production”, “absolutely amazing” and a “joyful experience”.

The run is set to conclude this weekend with one show tonight at Fort St Catherine and a free performance at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard tomorrow, sponsored by Wedco.

The Sunday performance is scheduled to start at 7pm, with audience members urged to bring their own blankets or chairs.

In the event of rain, the final show will instead be moved to Christ Church Warwick.

A spokesman for the organisation said that it was hoped the company would continue to grow, highlighting local talent.

“Our goal is to build our shows entirely in Bermuda and to hire Bermudians both on and offstage to work alongside highly experienced professionals from the United States,” he said.

“Our shows will continue to be free to Bermudians aged 18 and under, and we hope to bring The Tempest into every secondary school on the island.

“We are also exploring the possibilities of offering camps and classes as well as producing a ‘homecoming performance’ where Bermudians who have left the island to act professionally in the US and UK can return to Bermuda for a production that celebrates local talent, including young and aspiring performers.”

The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s final plays, is believed to be inspired by the story of the Sea Venture and follows the passengers of a ship stranded on a remote island by a storm.

The Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company production of The Tempest runs around 90 minutes, with about half of the original text and 12 original musical numbers with contemporary lyrics.
