The Bermuda Road Safety Council is advising pedestrians to take extra precautions to prevent accidents on the island’s roads.

In a statement, the council said that darker evenings meant it was important for pedestrians to ensure that they are visible to motorists.

The statement said: “Wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

“Always walk on the sidewalk where possible, or stay as far to the side of the road as you can if there isn’t one. Face oncoming traffic to stay aware of approaching vehicles, and always use designated crosswalks to cross the road.

“Stay alert by avoiding distractions like mobile phones or headphones, which can prevent you from hearing or seeing approaching dangers.”

The statement also advised motorists to take precautions.

The statement said: “Slow down in areas where pedestrians are likely to be present, such as near schools, bus stops or in residential areas.

Be ready to yield at crosswalks and always keep an eye out for people stepping off kerbs. At night, when visibility is reduced, be extra cautious and always reduce your speed.

“Distractions like texting or using your phone can have devastating consequences, so stay focused on the road at all times.

“The Bermuda Road Safety Council urges all road users to be more vigilant this month and every day, as we work together to make our roads safer for everyone.

“By raising awareness and encouraging safe behaviours, we can reduce accidents and protect our pedestrians. Let’s all do our part in keeping Bermuda’s roads safe.”
