Young people can learn practical gardening skills while they earn community service hours by taking part in a course run by the Mirrors Programme.

Registration has opened for term 1 of the Field of Learning Garden Club, which will run from October 15 to December 12.

The course is open to pupils aged 11 to 18 and sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm.

A government spokeswoman said participants will earn community service or co-curricular hours and they will also have the flexibility to choose on which dates they participate.

Kimberley Jackson, a programme manager at the Mirrors Programme, said: “Our aim is to empower students with practical gardening skills while teaching the importance of sustainability and community service.

“In addition to learning valuable skills, students will have the opportunity to donate harvested produce to seniors and families in need.

“This gives them a meaningful way to contribute to their community and reinforces the Mirrors Programme’s commitment to leadership and social responsibility.”

Nelson Bascome III, the Mirrors Programme’s lead gardener, said: “Gardening is therapeutic for the students, it allows them to connect with nature while learning patience and responsibility.

“It sparks a sense of accomplishment in them as they see the results of their hard work, and it encourages teamwork, focus and a deeper understanding of the environment and their role within it.”

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, said the course offered participants an opportunity to connect with nature.

She said they will be able to nurture their potential through meaningful service.

Ms Furbert added: “I encourage students to get involved and experience the impact it will have on their lives and their community.”
