Kamau Leverock’s Gujarat bow out on a low
Kamau Leverock was dismissed for five runs off three deliveries – his joint highest score in the Legends League Cricket – as his Gujarat Giants side lost to Konark Suryas Odisha by seven wickets to finish bottom yesterday.
The former Bermuda captain walked to the crease at No 6 with Gujarat on 62 for four in the eleventh over. This was after Trinidad & Tobago’s Kevon Cooper had decimated the batting order with LLC’s first hat-trick.
In his third over, Cooper struck to remove West Indies legend Chris Gayle for 34, Mohammad Kaif and Yashpal Singh for first-ball ducks for his three in a row. While the Bermudian scored a boundary and a single off Cooper, the Trinidadian was on the money again with the last delivery of that over to dismiss Indian great Shikhar Dhawan.
The Bermudian departed in the very next over when he was bowled by Shahbaz Nadeem. It was the second time that he made five runs, as he was also unbeaten on the same score when Gujarat lost by eight wickets to Southern Super Stars on September 26.
With Konark requiring 142 runs to book a spot in the play-offs, Leverock conceded 20 in his two overs, as their opponents cruised to victory with 30 balls to spare.
Gujarat, with one win and five defeats from seven matches, will play no further part in the LLC, which is now heading into the play-offs.
After being sold for 11 lakh (about $13,000) during the LLC auction in August, the 29-year-old never displayed any of his swashbuckling batting that Bermudian cricket fans are accustomed to.
He played four matches for Gujarat and took to the crease three times, with the left-hander facing up to 13 deliveries throughout the LLC. Leverock never got a wicket in the tournament.
Following his retirement from international cricket at the beginning of the year, the all-rounder had a great opportunity to market himself to white-ball franchise leagues dotted around the world.
With millions across the globe following LLC on television, it remains to be seen if Leverock’s display in India could earn him another lucrative deal.
