LeiLanni Nesbeth reaches play-offs in first season as professional
Bermuda midfielder LeiLanni Nesbeth’s Chicago Red Stars have secured a spot in the National Women’s Soccer League play-offs.
The Red Stars, who are sixth in the standings, sealed their eighth play-off berth in the club’s history after Washington Spirit’s 4-1 victory ended the hopes of Racing Louisville on Sunday.
The play-offs start on November 9, with the top four seeds, Kansas City Current, New Jersey/New York Gotham, Orlando Pride and Spirit, hosting quarter-final matches.
The quarter-final winners will advance to the semi-final round on November 16 and 17, before the NWSL Championship game is held on November 23 at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
“Chicago now single-handedly boasts the second most play-off appearances [eight] in NWSL history, participating in seven consecutive play-off tournaments between 2015 and 2022 and only bested for the record by Portland Thorns FC’s nine play-off appearances,’’ the club said.
“Chicago Red Stars head coach, Lorne Donaldson, is the seventeenth head coach in league history to reach the play-offs in their first season at the helm of an NWSL team.”
A day before clinching a play-off spot, the Bermudian, who is in her debut professional season with the Bridgeview-based side, was an unused substitute when they lost 2-0 at home to Gotham.
Nesbeth and her team-mates are back in action on Sunday when they face second-placed Washington Spirit in the US capital. They close out their regular season when they clash with the Kansas City Current on November 3.
In May, the former Florida State University captain scored her first professional goal in a 4-2 loss to Washington Spirit.
The 23-year-old has appeared 16 times for the Red Stars in midfield.
