Four health organisations have joined forces to hold a panel discussion on the latest treatment options for incontinence.

The Bermuda Hospitals Board has partnered with the Lahey Hospital and Medical Centre, Optimum Wellness and the Bermuda College Division of Nursing and Allied Health for the free event.

Jonathan Makanjuola, a urology consultant at the BHB, Jessica Mandeville, the director of endourology at Lahey, Arthur Mourtzinos, a vice-chairman of Lahey’s division of urology, and Michelle Monk, a registered physiotherapist at Optimum Wellness whose focus includes pelvic floor work, are the panellists.

Dr Makanjuola said: “In the UK it’s estimated that at least 7 to 10 per cent of the population have urinary incontinence, but this could well be under-reported as people feel embarrassed.

“If the same is true in Bermuda, that translates to over 6,000 people. Women are five times more likely to experience it, but men are impacted too.

“We will be sharing some great information that will help people know what to ask their doctor, for example, as well as what latest treatment options are available.”

Kathy-Ann Swan, the director of nursing and allied health at Bermuda College, added: “We want the community to be empowered by knowing more about this common problem.

“It can feel embarrassing for people, but there is hope out there and people don’t need to suffer.

“I hope this public event can increase awareness about what is possible with today’s treatment options.”

The event take place on Saturday from 3pm to 5pm at the Bermuda College lecture hall H-100.
