Attorney-General dismisses ‘false rumours’ of courtroom bullying
The Attorney-General has moved to dismiss rumours that she caused a “major fuss” at a court this week.
Posts circulating on WhatsApp and social media have alleged that Kim Wilkerson, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, also “slammed and banged on doors” of the Family Court over delays to a case.
The posts claimed that she had to be removed by a police officer on duty at the court.
However, in a statement in response to the rumours, she said: “I want to take a moment to address the situation that has circulated regarding my recent visit to Family Court.
“I was in court as the legal guardian of a child under a care order. My presence there was solely to ensure the welfare of this child — a responsibility I take very seriously.
“It has been falsely rumoured that I used my position as the Attorney-General to undermine or usurp the authority of the court. I want to assure you that this is not the case.”
Ms Wilkerson added: “As many people who attend Family Court know, delays can happen.
“Since the Family Court is a closed court, it is extremely troubling that misinformation could be spread from the court in such a sensational manner, with details that are neither accurate nor relevant to the case at hand.
“I am committed to serving with integrity in my role as Attorney-General. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify what transpired and to reaffirm my dedication to upholding the highest standards of professional conduct.”
The Royal Gazette asked the Bermuda Police Service if police were called to the court and a spokesman said: “On Tuesday, October 15, an officer assisted with a minor incident at the courts that was quickly resolved and did not require any further police action. There will be no further comment made.”
