The Government is looking for a contractor to build and renovate the former St David’s Post Office so that it may become a substation for the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard.

Plans were approved earlier this year and an application, submitted in June 2023, said that the location on St David’s Road was “strategically selected as these eastern waters are the main port of entry for incoming marine vessels travelling to Bermuda”.

It added: “Therefore, this additional station is a necessity for effective coastguard response service for the whole island.

“The substation facility also operates as safe lodging quarters for residences in need during hurricanes, evacuations and other disasters.”

A request for proposal published this week said the contractor will be responsible for “demolition of existing structures, debris removal, structural repairs, masonry, roofing, window replacement, door replacement and interior finishes” at the site.

The successful bidder will also have to install perimeter fencing, a new bund wall and a sliding entrance gate as well make upgrades to heating, plumbing, security and electrical systems.

The planning application also proposed 40 solar panels on top of the facility, which closed in 2014, as well as an operations room, sleeping area, surveillance room, restrooms and a weapons safe inside.

A government spokesman said this week that it would be “inappropriate” to provide a cost for the project until the RFP process was completed.

Senator Arianna Hodgson said last year that $150,000 would be used for the renovation.

A site visit is scheduled for 11am on October 29.

Proposals must be submitted either to the Ministry of Public Works on Church Street or by e-mail to publicworkstenders@gov.bm by November 15 at 4pm.
