A self-guided walk around Hamilton developed by the Bermuda Diabetes Association has been designed to promote healthy lifestyles.

The Blue Circle Walk, named after the United Nations international logo for diabetes, will be launched from the steps of City Hall at 12.30pm on Monday.

It is supported by “many” businesses and was inspired by conversations with people who work in Hamilton and said they wished to walk during lunch breaks but did not know where to go.

The BDA urged residents to look out for blue circle markers in the city that have a QR code, which will direct users to a route map.

Debbie Jones, a founder, director and executive committee member of the BDA, highlighted: “Walking is a great way to improve one’s health and mental outlook, and it doesn’t take a lot of expensive sporting equipment to do it.

“Put on a good pair of shoes and grab a water bottle and you’re ready to go.

“It doesn’t matter how fast or how far you walk, the important thing is to get moving.”

Millions of people with diabetes globally face daily challenges to manage their condition.

A key focus of the International Diabetes Federation over the next three years is putting wellbeing at the heart of diabetes care.

Ms Jones added: “Physical inactivity is one of the leading risk factors for an increased risk of death from noncommunicable diseases.

“So get moving and kick-off a commitment to a lifetime of healthy living and well being.”

The walk on Monday will be led by Ed Christopher, Hamilton’s town crier.
