Luke Fulton picks up Cup Match fair play award
It may have been delayed for a few months but St George’s Cup Match colt Luke Fulton finally picked up his commentator’s fair play award on Saturday.
Fulton, 17, who has been at Repton boarding school in England, was back on island during half term to pick up the annual Warrington “Soup” Zuill Cup Match Sportsmanship award, which was voted for by Allen Richardson, Wendell Smith and Allan Douglas Sr, with input from the Cup Match umpires.
Zuill was a keen St George’s supporter and mascot, and the award was presented by Zuill’s family, including son Hoyt, daughter Alicia and granddaughter Chante, who pointed out the award had previously been won by Glenn Blakeney, Damali Bell, Charles Trott, Kamau Leverock and OJ Pitcher.
“My father was a big person on sportsmanship and that was one of his big things when it comes to our young men, especially when it comes to Cup Match,” Hoyt Zuill said.
“One of the big things he used to say was, ‘Play the game hard but play it clean’. He always used to say that to the players when he went down to the St George’s dressing room.”
For his part, Fulton was thankful for winning the award and quick to display his gratitude.
“I’d just like to thank my coaches and all the people who voted for me for this award,” he said.
“It’s a big honour and I appreciate the Zuill family for giving me this award.”
A few months removed, Fulton has reflected on his Cup Match experience and is already thirsting for more.
“It was a really big opportunity for me and I really enjoyed it,” he said.
“There is no experience like it and it was just unreal. It was enjoyable despite the loss and really exciting to win this award.
“I just can’t wait to go again next year.”
