A group of corrections instructors from Bermuda recently underwent additional training on tactical force offered by Britain’s Ministry of Justice Overseas Territories Justice Programme.

Corrections instructors from the Cayman Islands and the Turks & Caicos Islands also took part in the training, hosted by the Bermuda Department of Corrections.

The Use of Force Instructor Revalidation Training was led by Razvan Chirica and Dave Clarricoates, of the National Tactical Response Group, a specialist unit of His Majesty’s Prison Service.

A government spokeswoman said: “Instructors were trained on the latest use of force and received a syllabus for training corrections staff within their respective territories.

“At the end of the training, the instructors’ qualifications were revalidated with a consistent standard of training that promotes safety and professionalism.”

Keeva Joell-Benjamin, the Commissioner of Corrections, said that training is part of the corrections department’s continuous professional development for officers and staff.

“We are committed to the safety of our officers, staff and inmates,” she added. “This course emphasises the importance of being prepared to manage diverse situations encountered during their duties."

“The Department of Corrections remains focused on ongoing development and maintaining high standards to ensure the safety and security of officers, staff and inmates.

“The department thanks the local dojo owner for their support and to all involved in delivering this training experience.”
