Seri Fisher brings home karate medals

Seri Fisher poses with her medals in Daytona Beach

Teenager Seri Fisher has won five medals at the USA Sport Karate Championships and Elite World Championships.

After qualifying at the North American Championships, in Las Vegas in March, 14-year-old Fisher was one of the youngest martial artists competing at Daytona Beach in the 14 to 17 age group, including against boys who had just turned 18.

On the first day of competition in the Elite World Championship, Fisher won silver in the traditional weapons competition, with gold taken by an 18 year old young man in a tight verdict.

The two clashed again in traditional forms, with Fisher shocking her older opponent with two of the three judges awarding her the gold medal and entry into the prestigious Champion of Champions competition.

Fisher also picked up silver in the Creative Weapons category, with that event not practiced in Bermuda.

In the USA Sport Karate Championships on Saturday, the Traditional weapons event drew eight top boys and girls, including two young men allowed to enter the younger age group.

The standard was top class, with Fisher winning bronze and producing perhaps her best-ever performance, beating out many favoured karate-ka and with the two older men being awarded second and fourth.

The final event featured 11 entries in the forms contest, with Fisher placing fourth behind two 18-year-old young men and a multi-event winning girl.

While most used longer and more complicated kata, Seri relied on good form, strong movement and precision, with coaches Sensei’ Phillips and Darrell at Zenji Ryu Dojo andSensei Arnold Allen all proud of her performance.
