Two women injured when a car crashed into a petrol station yesterday afternoon have been discharged from hospital.

A police spokesman said that at about 1.20pm, emergency services responded to a serious single-vehicle collision at the Rubis East Broadway Service Station in Pembroke.

“Upon arrival, it was observed that the SUV had crashed into the building,” the spokesman said. “The collision resulted in the wall near the cashier’s station being pushed in trapping a female employee inside.

“Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service personnel used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the employee. She was attended to at the scene by EMTs and subsequently transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to an injured leg.

“A female who was seated in the front passenger seat of the SUV complained of chest pains following the collision. She was also attended to by EMTs and transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.”

Anthony Pettit, 83, told The Royal Gazette that he and his wife had gone to the petrol station at about 1pm to refuel and get the tyres checked for any air leaks.

He said that he made his way for the road once his car had been serviced when it suddenly sped up and crashed into the wall.

Police also confirmed that a tourist who was struck by a bus yesterday has been released from KEMH after receiving treatment.

The spokesman said: “The incident occurred at about 10.35am when the Public Transport Bus made a right turn off of Front Street and entered Bermudiana Road.

“The pedestrian, a female visitor to the island, suffered a leg injury in the collision.”

A witness told The Royal Gazette the pedestrian appeared to have head and leg injuries but was conscious and able to talk to bus passengers who went to her aid.

He said that the woman told them she was 77 years old and visiting Bermuda on a cruise ship.

The witness added: “Fortunately the bus had been stopped at a green traffic light giving way to oncoming traffic before making the turn, so it wasn’t travelling fast.”

Anyone with information about either incident was asked to call the main police number, 295-0011, or the non-emergency reporting number, 211.
