The purpose of government

Dear Sir,

The purpose of the Bermuda Government is to serve the people. The purpose of all governments is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. Government employees are referred to as civil servants.

The attitude of Bermuda’s civil servants is that the people are subservient to the Government. Authority not granted to the Government is retained by the people. If an activity is not deemed to be illegal, it is legal. Law prohibits activities that are abhorrent to society.

The condition of the people serving the Government is not entirely the fault of the people. Because of the legacy of the British monarchy, people actually believe they serve the monarchy. Bermuda has a constitution — the highest form of law in this country. Allegiance should always be to the Constitution. Any allegiance to the King/Queen and their heirs is simply playing a game of thrones. We cannot be a country of laws and have a king. Kings are not subject to the law; kings are above the law; kings are the law. Those days are over.

No laws created by Parliament can be in conflict or violate the Bermuda Constitution Order 1968. It is the job of the Civil Service to execute the laws of this country. It is not the job of the Civil Service to question the laws of this country.

The most powerful tool available to people is their ability to associate for the protection of their interests and their right to free speech. People are not allowed to associate for the purpose of insurrection or to bring about change by violence.

Bermuda’s majority ethnic/racial population was obstructed from education until the early 1970s — this although they were made equal to White people by law on August 1, 1834. If your racial group has been obstructed from education for multiple generations, you are not going to magically become academically and intellectually equal to the group that has been systematically and institutionally ensuring that you were misinformed and uninformed. Apartheid, Jim Crow and segregation are very effective tools to ensure economic inequality.

Bermuda’s huge Civil Service ensures allegiance to the Government. No sane person bites the hand that feeds them — even if that hand is not clean. This condition motivates politicians and the Civil Service to exploit their positions. The only power a politician and a civil servant have are the powers that are delegated to them in law. The word “otherwise” does not authorise the Government to do whatever it wants.

The sole purpose of the Government is to tax the people and to provide services we are unable to provide for ourselves — roads, bridges, police, hospital, public education, etc.

Bermuda has too much government. The Bermuda Government and its political tsars must be reined in. All “power” delegated to the Premier, the Cabinet and the Civil Service is spelt out in law. The people must stop this infringement upon our rights to associate for the purpose of protecting our interests.

In particular, our right to insure ourselves against accidental financial loss. The Bermuda Government should not be obstructing us from participating in our insurance dollars. There is no law in Bermuda prohibiting us from retaining our insurance dollars. If authority has not been delegated to the Government, it is retained by the people.

The Bermuda Government is wittingly or unwittingly aiding and abetting those who benefit from unfair business practices and violation of the people’s rights to associate for the protection of their interests. If you think education is expensive, you should try ignorance!

Our organisation has been obstructed from retaining our third-party auto insurance dollars for more than ten years. The Bermuda Government has no right to do this — it is a violation of our constitutional rights. The Bermuda courts have failed to stop the Government and its proxies. When the courts fail to protect our fundamental rights, there is no limit to the actions of politicians and their proxies, the Civil Service.

The purpose of the Government is to serve the people; the people do not serve the Government. The Civil Service works for the people — not the politicians.
