Youngsters expected to shine in Liberty Mutual mixed team relay championships
Bermuda’s budding triathletes will get an opportunity to compete against adults in tomorrow’s rescheduled Liberty Mutual Mixed Team Relay National Championships at Clearwater Beach in St David’s.
The event, which was postponed due to lightning in September, marks the end of the triathlon season on the island.
Competition is for the seven to 10 and 11+ age groups. The younger competitors will take part in a 100m swim, 5k bike and 1k run. Male, female and mixed are the categories for this particular age group.
For the 11+, they are doing a 300m swim, 10k bike and 2k run. Five categories are in place for this age bracket – male, female, mixed, corporate, and family.
In the 11+, some of the teams to keep an eye on are a combination between Bermuda’s gold medal-winners at the Carifta Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships in Barbados, Naomi MacGuinness and Sanchez Smith.
Jackson Langley has teamed up with Dylan Eiselt, Marie-Lyn Dore and Yan Leclerc are also in contention, together with the Bortoli siblings, Gianluca and Carina, while the veteran pair of Will Green and Alex Waldauer will be favourites.
Jake Smith was meant to compete with his father Geoff, but an Achilles problem has forced Smith senior to withdraw. This has left the 17-year-old, who was the second best male at Cambridge Beaches, looking for a partner.
For the 7-10, the Horrobin brothers, Liam and Nolan, who enjoyed a one-two finish in last Sunday’s Cambridge Beaches Triathlon, are expected to dominate. They should get good competition from the pairing of Chloe Durkin and Elliot Davidge, as well as Mathew Hoey’s combination with Adrian Myers.
The event starts at 2pm, which will allow the multitalented athletes to engage in other sporting activity earlier in the day. Langley, Eiselt, Smith, and others have also signed up for a mountain bike race on the South Shore Beach Trails.
