Pair of thieves sentenced to year in prison
Men who stole tools from a parked car have each been sentenced to one year behind bars.
Andrew Arorash, 50, and Jahroy Simons, 38, both admitted stealing the items, valued at $980, when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court in August.
The court heard that the men took an oscillating tool, two saws, a toolbox, drills and a planer from the car, which was parked outside the Rayclan car repair company in Pembroke, on June 7.
The men faced other offences during August’s court appearance — Arorash, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to trespassing on to a property on Woodbourne Avenue and damaging a car door on the premises on June 15.
Simons, from Sandys, admitted stealing a bottle of Louis XIII cognac, valued at $4,947.50, other alcohol and a bike between June 6 and 19.
Arorash has been in custody since June and Simons was remanded in August.
Both men apologised for their actions when they reappeared in court for sentencing yesterday.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin sentenced Arorash to 30 days behind bars for trespassing and six months for damaging the car door, which will run consecutive to his and Simons’ year in prison for stealing the tools.
Mr Chin sentenced Simons to one year behind bars for stealing the alcohol, which he admitted selling to get money for drugs, and 18 months for taking the bike.
These sentences will begin after Simons’s 12-month term for stealing the tools, and both sentences will run concurrently.
Mr Chin ordered that time the men already spent in custody be taken into account and that they be considered for residential drug treatment after being released.
