Ministers spend $18,000 on summer trips

Two Cabinet ministers spent $18,000 travelling overseas between July and September according to the Government’s travel calendar webpage.

Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, attended the British Labour Party annual conference in the UK in September.

Mr Hayward was off the island from September 20 to 25 to attend the conference which cost $8,765.41 in air travel, ground transportation, accommodation and meals.

Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, was off the island in August to attend the Olympic Games in Paris.

His trip from August 3 to 8 ran up expenses of $6,792.59 in air travel, ground transportation, accommodation and meals.

The Government said that, while in Paris, Mr Darrell engaged with other sports ministers and Olympic officials from around the world to discuss potential areas of elite sports development ideas.

He was also invited to the Olympic Village by the Bermuda Olympic Association and had the opportunity to give personal congratulations to some of the athletes.

In September, Mr Darrell travelled to the Cayman Islands to attend business meetings hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation.

The trip from September 2 to 5 cost the taxpayer $2,402.46 in air travel, ground transportation, accommodation and meals.

Mr Hayward was off island between July 9 and 11 to attend the United Arab Emirates partnership agreement signing in New York.

The exchange programme allows Bermuda to participate in the UAE’s Government Experience Exchange Programme.

The trip cost $349.48, which represented meals.
