New story walk to feature at Botanical Gardens
A literacy initiative at the Botanical Gardens is to feature a new story walk this month, the Ministry of Public Works announced.
The ministry said that on November 23 Daddy and I Explore, by David Chapman, will be featured at the project, which started this year to combine literacy and the outdoors.
The launch event begins with a ceremony at 10.15am followed by a “Story Time” session on the Celebration Lawn of the gardens.
The scheme, sponsored by Deloitte, will feature Dr Chapman’s story on boards strategically placed around the site, each telling part of the fictional story.
It builds on the launch of the initiative in May, which featured the story Abigail’s Dream Adventures, by Bermudian author Karen Franks.
A ministry spokesman said: “The Botanical Gardens story walk offers a free, enjoyable and accessible opportunity for families to foster a love of reading while promoting physical activity.”
He said the concept was originally created by Anne Ferguson, from Montpelier, Vermont, and combined the joy of reading with the beauty of the outdoors, creating an educational activity for families.
The spokesman added: “The Department of Parks and the Bermuda Youth Library are thrilled to continue offering this innovative experience that promotes early literacy and encourages families to enjoy the natural beauty of the Botanical Gardens.”
