Dame Flora Duffy chasing contract in T100 final
Dame Flora Duffy goes on the hunt for a guaranteed contract as she competes in The T100 World Triathlon Tour Series Final in Abu Dhabi on Saturday morning.
The race, which starts at 5.30am Bermuda time, is the last on the inaugural T100 tour and, after competing in just two races, Duffy sits in eleventh place on 55 points in the women’s standings after finishing ninth in Ibiza and third in Las Vegas.
The top ten finishers in the overall standings after the final are guaranteed to earn a contract for next year’s T100 series and Duffy will need to leapfrog Britain’s Lucy Charles-Barclay to make it into those all-important spots.
As well as the contract, there is huge prize-money on offer depending on where you finish the series, with $35,000 on offer if Duffy finishes tenth overall. That figure rises to $45,000 if she can force her way into the top eight.
It has been a tough transition to the longer format for Duffy, especially on the difficult bike leg where gaps between athletes can grow quickly, and Bermuda’s Olympic champion has been working hard in Boulder, Colorado, in the three weeks between her last race in Ibiza and this final.
Leading the T100 rankings is American Taylor Knibb, who is undefeated on tour this season, winning her three T100 events in San Francisco, Ibiza and Las Vegas.
She is 13 points ahead of Australian Ashleigh Gentle, who has had two wins a fourth and seventh, but in this tour only the athlete’s best three results plus the grand final count towards their points tally. Gentle needs to finish at least two positions ahead of Knibb is she is take the World Series title. Britain’s India Lee is third in the standings after winning in Miami.
