One of the newest members of Bermuda’s supermarket sector is to open at a second location.

The English Market, which launched in Hamilton’s Washington Mall in 2021, is busy preparing a new shop at the Esso petrol station on Rose Hill in St George.

Owner Fabio Iannone said: “If all goes well, before Christmas we should be open.”

Mr Iannone said the popularity of the Hamilton store with customers from the island’s East End is behind the move.

“Since we started to become popular, people from St George’s and St David’s came on Tuesdays for our 10 per cent discount to do their weekly grocery shopping.

“The idea came from our customers. They said they loved our prices told us that we should open a location in the East End.

“Then a customer told us about space that was available. I went there, and had a vision for a new store.”

Mr Iannone said the Washington Mall store carries some 10,000 items in 5,000 square feet.

The St George store will cover 1,200 square feet.

He said: “In St George, we will have everything we have in Hamilton, but on a smaller scale.

“We expect people to come there and do their weekly or daily shopping. We will also have a hot buffet lunch, as well.

“The prices are going to be the same as we have in town.”

Mr Iannone said the new store will employ eight people, adding to the 16 staff at the Hamilton location.

He added: “Being able to open a second location means that Bermuda needs The English Market. We are cheaper, and we have good quality products.”

Mr Iannone said customers of the Washington Mall store have encouraged him to consider opening a shop in the West End, as well.

He added: “You never know. In the future, it might happen.”
