Gayle Lindsay wins May 24 rematch in PartnerRe Women’s 5K
There was a Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby rematch in the PartnerRe Women’s 5K on Sunday.
Nearly 300 women, mostly wearing pink, took part in the event, which has raised $500,000 for female-related causes in Bermuda since 1998, with the funds gathered this year going to the Women's Resource Centre and the Reading Clinic’s Core Reading Programme.
It was no surprise, given the turnout, that some of Bermuda’s top runners participated in the race, which turned out to have parallels with the island’s biggest contest of the year, the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.
The race turned out to be a pulsating contest, with the first two home on May 24 finishing in the same order at the Botanical Gardens on Sunday, as Gayle Lindsay again got the better of Christine Dailey.
Lindsay (18:46) came home 23 seconds ahead of her familiar rival, who finished in 19:09, with Megan Berry finishing third in 19:32.
Naomi MacGuinness, aged just 11, finished fourth in 19:56, with Kristen Robinson (20:34) rounding out the top five.
There was a tight finish in the race for girls aged 7 to 14 over 2km, with Riana Robinson and Colette Durkin crossing the line together at 6:26, with Robinson just getting the nod in a photo finish.
Evelyn Fahy (6:37) finished third, with Zara Bule (6:46) and Charleigh Gilchrist (7:08) rounding out the top five.
The 5K competitive walk was taken by Laura Wright in 36:28, with Sandra O’Brien (38:14) second and Katarzyna Murach (38:29) third.
