People can learn about creating sustainable environments and products at the Bermuda College on Thursday.

Eimeir Johnston will deliver the free lecture, Sustainable residential interiors and the built environment Bermuda, in the College’s Athene Room H100 from 1pm to 2pm.

Ms Johnston has a background in environmental design, earned awards from organisations including the Bermuda Architect Association and the City of Hamilton and has work published in several books, magazines, newspapers and online.

Amy Harvey, earth and environmental science senior lecturer at Bermuda College, explained: “Sustainable design is something that we as Bermudians were historically doing before it had a name.

“We designed our houses to face a certain way to let the summer breeze through before air conditioning was a thing, our roofs are perfectly pitched to allow for water catchment, we use local supplies to build our homes.”

Ms Harvey added: “There are so many innovations available [to reduce energy usage and costs] and we look forward to hearing more about how these can be applied in Bermuda.”

Jennifer Flood, executive director of the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce, said materials used for interior plywood, furniture, veneers and flooring were unsustainable.

She explained: “For these reasons, and many others, Ms Johnson’s presentation on November 21, looking into the use of more sustainable materials in interiors and elsewhere, is timely.

“It will be of great interest, hopefully encouraging a move away from the rare, endangered woods and damaging products.”

The presentation, which is part of the College and the Best’s Eco Lunch and Learn series, will be followed by a Q and A session and can also be viewed on facebook.com/BermudaCollege and youtube.com/@bermudacollege/streams.

Refreshments will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, but attendees must bring their own beverages.
