Nick Pilgrim shines in BUCS Duathlon Championship
Bermudian triathlete Nick Pilgrim played a key role in helping Bath University win the British Universities and Colleges Sport Duathlon Championships on Sunday.
Pilgrim completed the race in 55min 43sec, finishing fifteenth overall out of 516 participants and eighth in the 20-24 age group.
The event, held at the iconic Mallory Park Circuit in Leicester, marked the start of the 2024-25 British triathlon season. Competitors tackled a challenging course comprising a 5km run, a 20km bike ride, and a 2.5km run.
The team standings were determined by the fastest cumulative times of three athletes from each institution.
Pilgrim was the fifth Bath University athlete to finish, with Johnny James leading the team by securing second place behind Nottingham University’s Oliver Conway. Thomas Birley, Mack Downey, Joshua Prendergast and Zak Clemens also crossed the line ahead of Pilgrim to contribute to Bath’s victory.
“The race really went well; the whole team performed strongly,” the 21-year-old said. “I was happy with the way I ran and how the training came together.
“It was a good confidence-booster moving forward with races for the rest of the season. Most of the priority races will be in the summer, around June.”
Viewed as one of Bermuda’s promising triathlon prospects, Pilgrim, ranked No 785 in the world and No 207 in the Americas, is eagerly anticipating the release of next season’s schedule.
“I’m mainly focusing on winter training now since the triathlon season is over,” Pilgrim said. “The new race schedule should be out around Christmastime, so I’ll be able to plan which races will be best for me.”
