Health ministry: second case of measles confirmed
A second case of measles has been confirmed, the Ministry of Health said today.
The Government said that close contacts were being notified of the case and all necessary precautions were being implemented.
A first case was confirmed last week.
Measles symptoms initially include fever, fatigue, cough, runny nose, sore red eyes and a rash that starts on the face and spreads.
Anyone who suspects measles or that they may have been exposed should contact their healthcare provider promptly.
A reminder was issued to the community to protect against measles by ensuring measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations are up to date.
Children should receive doses at 12 to 15 months and again at four to six years.
Adults born after 1957 who lack immunity should verify they have had two MMR doses at least four weeks apart.
Vaccinations are available at GP offices or the Hamilton Health Centre.
Vaccination clinics are available at the Hamilton Health Centre on the dates and times listed below for people who need an MMR vaccine.
• November 25 to 29: Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm
• December 2 to 6: Monday to Friday, 4pm to 6pm
Clinics are for people aged 12 months and older who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.
Anyone under isolation owing to exposure should wait until cleared before attending.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, highlighted the importance of vaccination to protect against the highly contagious disease, which can cause severe complications such as pneumonia and brain swelling.
She said: “Ensuring vaccinations are up to date is critical to safeguarding the health of our community.
“I urge everyone to take proactive measures to protect themselves and their families against this highly contagious disease, which remains common in parts of the world.”
Residents were strongly encouraged to take advantage of the clinics.
