Bermuda sevens team win Plate final in Trinidad

Bermuda’s sevens team pose after beating Cayman Islands in Plate Final

Bermuda’s rugby sevens team got one over on their former head coach by winning the Plate final at the Rugby Americas North tournament in Trinidad on Sunday.

On a heavy pitch that had been battered by rain over the course of the tournament, tries from Jahniko Francis and Hadleigh Tucker gave Bermuda a 10-5 win over Cayman Islands, who are trained by former Bermuda head coach Jamie Barnwell.

The victory ensured that Bermuda ended the tournament on a high, finishing fifth in the eight-team competition after three days of tough games in often inclement conditions.

It had been a slow start to the tournament for Bermuda, who lost their first game 19-7 to Barbados on Friday before being beaten 38-0 by eventual champions Canada and 12-7 by Guyana in a tight game on Saturday.

A 14-0 defeat in the quarter-final by Mexico in their first game on Sunday left Bermuda in the Plate competition, with the team finishing eighth relegated to Tier Two of Rugby Americas North.

But their first win of the competition was soon to arrive as they reversed the result from their opening game against Barbados, prevailing 19-10 to banish any fears of relegation and propelling them into the Plate Final and a victorious climax to the tournament against Cayman Islands.
