Summit to discuss violence against women
The effects of violence on women in Bermuda is to be discussed at an annual empowerment summit tomorrow.
The event, in its ninth year, will be hosted at the Ocean View Golf Course in Devonshire from 10am with the theme The Uprising.
Carla Zuill, founder of the summit, said participants can look forward to a day of connectivity, sharing and a range of emotions.
She said: “The summit was initially intended to be a one-off when I created it.
“A few months after it was held, I received a call asking the date of the second one.
“My intention was not to hold any more but then I had a rethink and I’ve never looked back. Even during Covid, I didn’t miss a beat.”
She said when the event was hosted virtually in 2020 and 2021, hundreds of women attended, adding that she was proud it had reached its ninth year.
Tomorrow’s event is to open with a fashion show by personal stylist Nicole Grant and will be followed by presentations by Angel Burgess, founder of women’s empowerment brand, I am Enough Bermuda, Nicole Fox, an antiviolence advocate and Caroline Desmarais, a film producer and philanthropist.
The effects of violence on women on the island will be discussed by a panel during the afternoon session.
Panellists will include Laurie Shiell, director of the Centre Against Abuse, parents Dawn Trott and Gloria Daniels, Dayla Burgess, a clinical counsellor, and Gina Spence-Virgil, a community advocate.
The event, which will be hosted by Ms Zuill, is to include an announcement of the annual Woman Of The Year award.
Ms Zuill said: “The Women’s Empowerment Summit is a safe space for women to gather, share their accomplishments, their challenges and offer tools to improve their everyday lives.
“Women from all walks of life are welcomed.”
Tickets for the event will be available at the door and can also be accessed at www.shehub.tv
