Fireworks debate lights up House of Assembly
A pyrotechnics company has been granted tax concessions in a first for the island's tourism industry.
Swan Pyrotechnics Ltd will be granted tax rebates for providing tourism-related services through firework displays that will enhance the island's visitor product over the next five years.
Although tax concessions have been granted to hoteliers in the past, SPL’s are the first time that a company providing tourism-related services has been granted tax relief.
The Tourism Investment Order was put to MPs during Friday's session of the House of Assembly by the Junior Minister of Tourism, Kim Swan.
Mr Swan applauded the company, claiming that it had already created “memorable experiences” on the island.
Mr Swan said he was “pleased” for the House to take the order under consideration, adding that the company was established in providing “safe and pyrotechnical displays”.
The order was backed by the OBA’s Craig Cannonier, who said: “What we’re doing here is enabling someone who has spent the time to be educated in such explosive materials and equipment.
“So it’s nice to know that we have a Bermudian here who has taken the time.”
The significance of the legislation was highlighted by the Premier, who said: “What we are discussing here today is a Tourism Investment Order for an attraction.
“Why is that important? It is important because the Government has gone out to the industry to remind them that we changed the law so that tourism investment orders do not only apply to hotels and restaurants, but can also apply to attractions.
“What we want to make sure is that our local entrepreneurs have access to concessions just like hotel developers do. That is what we’re doing here today.”
