Bermuda beat Argentina in T20 World Cup warm-up
Onias Bascome and Jonté Smith showcased their class as Bermuda secured a convincing 42-run victory against Argentina in their first T20 World Cup warm-up match at the Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires yesterday.
Bascome led Bermuda’s batting effort with a blistering 49 off 31 balls, including five sixes, while Smith dominated with the ball, taking four wickets. The win comes just days before the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Sub-Regional Qualifier tournament.
After Bermuda captain Terryn Fray lost the toss, his side was put into bat. Early trouble arose when opener Alex Dore fell for just two runs, caught by Santiago Duggan. Fray then steadied the innings with Tre Manders in a 38-run partnership until Manders was trapped leg-before in the seventh over, leaving Bermuda at 44 for two.
Bascome entered at No. 4 and wasted no time taking on the Argentine bowlers. His quickfire innings complemented Fray’s measured 43. Bascome’s dismissal, via a run-out at 126 for four, marked the peak of Bermuda’s innings, with additional contributions from Dominic Sabir (11), Dion Stovell (8 not out), and Derrick Brangman (13), setting a target of 154.
Argentina’s chase faltered early, with opener Bruno Angeletti bowled by Zeko Burgess. A promising 58-run partnership between Alejandro Ferguson and captain Pedro Baron gave the hosts hope, but Stovell’s breakthrough, dismissing Baron, triggered a collapse. Seven of Argentina’s remaining batters failed to reach double figures as they limped to 112 for eight.
Bermuda’s all-round performance, highlighted by Bascome’s explosive batting and Smith’s devastating spell, sets a strong tone heading into the tournament.
