Disdain for the White middle class

A duty to protect: Ian Waddington fears for the island’s future (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

When the Progressive Labour Party was first elected into government in Bermuda, the majority of White Bermudians were somewhat apprehensive about the upcoming years under a Black government. The early days of government were not actually that much different from some of the previous years under the United Bermuda Party, but as time went on, a strange element of United States politics slowly crept into the very fabric of our political scene.

It became clear that the new PLP was never going to respect the middle-class White Bermudian business population, which in many respects is one of the main contributors to the tax base beneath our international business.

Over the years, evidence has surfaced in the media and elsewhere — not forgetting the “our people” references during many press releases and via spoken word in the House of Assembly — that clearly indicate the present government is not interested in good relations with middle-class White Bermudian business.

I recall the speech in 2019 that stated, “We will not seek the permission of those who do not share our goals for a fairer and better Bermuda.” Strangely enough, in the same speech, it was declared that the PLP must never lose sight of who the real enemy are. Quite a contradiction when in today’s world it is clear that almost every Bermudian wants a fairer and better Bermuda.

Unfortunately, to the long-term detriment of Bermuda, this is not happening when it comes to the Government creating this “fair” Bermuda. Ask around and you will find that White business is subjected to inconsiderate and lengthy delays when it comes to finding help within the existing workforce and hiring staff for jobs that our local workforce admittedly don’t want to do. These delays are unnecessary and quite obviously affect the economy in every aspect.

It is generally accepted that a labour government will protect the workers, and there is nothing new about this very simple political agenda. However, there is also a duty to protect the economy and everyone that strives to provide a better living for their families.

Treating White business as the enemy is not healthy governance, and the suggestions may be that continuing with the obvious dislike policy will undoubtedly erode the fabric that this tiny island should and economically must enjoy and respect.

It was only last month that I heard that the Bermudian identity has been shaped and enriched by all who have joined this community over the years. Yes, I totally agree. But does everyone agree?
