School spirit celebrated with a twist in Somerset
Somerset Primary School’s yearly Spirit Week has come around again with extra cause for celebration.
The week of dress-up, where pupils and teachers turn up in costume each day under a different theme, arrived with special school spirit this year after Somerset Primary was given a chance this month to continue accepting new students for P1.
Diallo Rabain, the education minister, met earlier with its parent-teacher association and agreed to continue enrolment until the school closes under education reforms.
The PTA told The Royal Gazette that Spirit Week was an end-of-term tradition reflecting that not all students’ families celebrated Christmas, allowing youngsters to come up with creative ways to celebrate their school and its West End community.
Monday’s theme called for sunglasses with school uniform, while Tuesday marked “retro day”.
Students dressed in cosy gear with books and hot chocolate under yesterday’s theme, which went well with the island’s chilly weather.
The event began during the Covid-19 pandemic as a reading and fun day, which was incorporated into Spirit Week once children were able to return to the classroom.
It came with teachers and parents reading stories for children.
Bright clothing is called for today on Highlighter Day, while old clothing is tomorrow’s style for Holes Day.
Spirit Week closes tomorrow night with a movie night for children that is also a fundraiser for the school.
This year’s film will be the Christmas classic Home Alone.
