Guilty plea from lawyer who was over legal limit in car

A lawyer who obstructed police will be sentenced in Magistrates’ Court in February.

Paul Wilson, 41, admitted the offence, as well as having care and control of a car while over the legal blood-alcohol limit, when he appeared in court yesterday.

Wilson, from Hamilton Parish, initially denied these offences, as well as having care and control of the vehicle while impaired by alcohol and attempting to pervert the course of justice by “reminding and advising police officers” of his position as a Crown counsel.

He did not plead to the latter two charges yesterday, but they remain on file.

Wilson worked for the Department of Public Prosecutions, but was assigned to another department in February until the matter could be adjudicated.

The court heard during his trial, before he changed his plea, that police found him asleep in a car in Devonshire on December 2, 2023.

The vehicle’s engine and headlights were on when an officer approached.

Wilson, who smelt of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet, was taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Footage captured on the officer’s body camera showed Wilson asking if “he was proud of himself” and saying that he would “find out who put you guys up to this”.

Magistrate Craig Attridge ordered that social inquiry and drug use reports be written for Wilson.

He adjourned sentencing until February 12 and extended Wilson’s $1,500 bail until that time.
