Bermuda’s young sailors are making their way back to the island after a rewarding experience at the Optimist World Championships in Argentina.

After a tough weeklong competition of individual and team racing, it was Nina Gotfredsen who coped best with the rough seas, crazy currents and shifty winds to beat the Bermuda boys and record the best finishing position of the five local sailors.

Gotfredsen finished seventeenth in the silver fleet and was ranked 92nd overall of the 225 sailors after 11 races at the regatta in Rio de la Plata. Her best finishing position came when ninth in the silver fleet in the penultimate contest.

Miguel Power was next best of the Bermuda sailors, finishing 122nd overall and was unlucky not to finish much higher after receiving two disqualifications, with one of his 76pt races needed to count towards his score. On the positive side, Power produced the best individual performance when finishing second in the silver fleet in race eight.

Evan Davis was next in the rankings, recording a final finishing position of 182nd overall, but he saved his best for last when coming home sixteenth in the bronze fleet on the final day of competition.

Rory Savage was just 13 places behind Davis in 195th and had a best finishing position of 29th in the final race, while Noah Amaradasa finished 215th overall after picking up two disqualifications and failing to finish in another race. His best effort came when 29th in race eight.
