A programme to introduce young children to foundational physical activities is set for launching in January, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport said.

Owen Darrell also noted that the Active Children Sports Academy will encourage children to have lifelong participation in sports.

He told the Upper House yesterday that the project falls under the first goal of the 2022-2027 National Sports Policy.

The goal is to develop a grassroots programme for children between the ages of 3 and 6.

Mr Darrell said the policy serves as a guiding framework for the ministry and he noted that its mission is both aspirational and transformative.

He said the ministry is making “good progress” in the implementation of all five goals of the sports policy.

In other highlights, Mr Darrell told the Senate that the island’s sports facilities are being fully used by residents.

He said there is a monthly average of 325 users at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, 200 at the Motorsport Park and 500 at the WMC Preece Softball Park.

Mr Darrell also noted that the island’s camping facilities at Paget, Darrell’s and Ports islands were “well utilised” this year, with more than 5,700 campers enjoying recreation and the outdoor environment.

He told the Upper House: “Let us carry forward the spirit of these programmes, nurturing our cultural heritage, fostering our tourism connections, and encouraging and supporting our sports initiatives.”
