Government seeks new waterside barges for docks
The Government is looking to find an engineering firm to design replacements for floating docks across the island.
According to a recent request for proposal, the project would involve fresh parts for docks for the Hamilton Ferry Terminal, the Dockyard Ferry Terminal and the Hamilton Marine and Ports Depot, using existing mooring piles.
“The existing floating barges are heavily corroded and beyond repair,” the procurement documents said. “Reuse of existing gangways, platforms and ramps, if possible, is preferred.
“The scope of the project includes surveying of the as-built terminals and condition assessment of elements that may be reused, preparing a replacement design proposal and producing construction drawings, specifications and cost estimates.”
Documents included in the RFP said that fenders would also need to be replaced.
However, the canopy and canopy supports, which have already been replaced recently, can remain.
“The top of one mooring pile at Dockyard has been slightly damaged, perhaps by a boat collision,” the documents continued. “The rest of the walls and piles are understood to be in good condition and sufficient in strength.
“The replacement floating barges should have a 30 year-design life.”
The RFP said the project would be carried out in three phases, with the Ministry of Public Works reviewing documents at the end of each phase.
A pre-bid site visit is scheduled to take place on January 8, with the deadline for submissions to be 3pm on January 29.
