While cassava pie and turkey with all the trimmings make for an appetising Christmas dinner table, what’s under the tree can sometimes make a more lasting impression.

This festive season, say Bermuda’s consumer electronics retailers, that means gaming consoles, mobile phones, televisions, musical instruments, and more.

Kenneth Styles-Pemberton, the owner and general manager of Gear & Gadget on Queen Street in Hamilton, said: “Right now, everyone’s into gaming.

“The PlayStation 5 units were extremely costly when they came out two or three years ago, but now prices are down about half.”

The PlayStation portal, a remote handheld device, has also been popular.

Mr Styles-Pemberton added: “Outside of air pods, which we sell like cigarettes, air tags are very popular.

“Now, you can trace items like bikes, phones, or luggage. Anything you can put the air tag on, you can trace.

“Also, a lot of people are travelling more so there is a lot of demand for power banks and travel chargers.”

Mr Styles-Pemberton said sales this holiday season had been “steady, on par with last year”.

Alex Jones, co-owner and manager of iRepair on Reid Street in Hamilton, said: “Everyone loves an iPad; you’ll never go wrong buying someone an iPad for Christmas.”

Mr Jones added: “Some lucky children are getting an iPhone, although we recommend that they get a job first.”

Also popular, he said, are Bluetooth headphones.

Donnie Correia, general manager at Sound Decision on Church Street in Hamilton, said televisions are a hot item.

“This year, what is really popular is the OLED TV. Size-wise 55in to 85in TVs have been the popular sizes for us.”

Mr Correia said guitars, keyboards, drums and amplifiers have also been popular purchases from the store’s wide-ranging stock as have smaller items such as headphones.

He added: “We’ve had a really solid season this year.”

Kevin Davies is the president and chief executive at Audio Visual Electronics, which has locations on Washington Street, in Hamilton, and on Mangrove Bay Road, in Sandys.

He said: “TVs are always popular, especially big TVs now. People are going large. We have 75in, 85in, I even have a 100in TV in stock.

“Soundbars are also a popular addition to a TV.”

Mr Davies said Samsung smart phones and Apple iPhones are also proving popular.

He added: “We sell a lot of Amazon firesticks and stocking stuffers like phone cases and chargers.”
