Some of Bermuda’s best young squash players rounded out the year by competing in the National Junior Championships last weekend.

With plenty of games and numerous players competing in multiple age groups, there was a feast of action at Bermuda Squash & Fitness Club in Devonshire.

One of Bermuda’s rising stars, Mason Smith, came out on top in the under-13 and under-15 divisions, beating James Bigley 11-4, 11-7, 11-1 in the older age group and coming through a tight final in the younger tournament when beating Benjamin Sherratt 11-8, 11-2, 9-11, 14-12 to complete his double.

Despite defeat in the under-13 final, Sherratt gained ample compensation when defeating second seed Kaiden DeSilva 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 in the boys under-11 competition.

Top seed Owen Rosorea did not drop a set on his way to winning the boys under-17 division, beating No 3 seed Jonah Avery 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 in the final, while Andrew Cox completed a sweep for the top seeds when beating William Frith 12-10, 11-2, 11-5 in the under-19 final.

Gabrielle Turchiaro, the No 1 seed, won an exciting four-set match against second seed Tyler Komposch 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 11-6 to be named the girls under-19 champion.

The remaining girls competitions were played in a round-robin tournament and Olivia Sherratt came out on top among the under 17s, winning all three matches without dropping a set against Rose Paulos, Somers Stevenson and McKenna Kyme.

Kyme was competing above her regular age bracket in that competition but excelled in her regular under-15 age group, winning both her matches without dropping a set against Taylor Kyme and Nila Samuels.

Taylor Kyme was another to compete in multiple events and she was victorious in both her games in the under-13 division against Hyla Hunter and Ariya Samuels, who was named champion at under-11 level when beating Elizabeth Furtado.
