Ministers spend $23,710 on overseas travel
The Premier and three ministers have spent more than $23,000 on travel between October and November, according to the Government’s travel calendar.
The trips, totalling $23,710.53, took the ministers to London, Barbados and Miami between October 23 and November 22.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, visited London for the Bermuda Wealth Forum London Roundtable hosted by the Bermuda Business Development Agency.
He travelled between November 17 and November 22, spending $7,764.50 on air travel, $2,789.12 on accommodation and $297.12 on food. Costs totalled $10,850.74.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, went to Barbados between October 30 and November 1 during a trip that spent almost $4,647,93.
She attended the XVI Ministerial Forum for Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, where Ms Furbert spoke as a panellist.
The theme of the forum was “Resilience in Action: Social Policies to Navigate Uncertainty in Latin America and the Caribbean”.
During the forum, called “Adaptive Social Protection Systems to Build Resilience”, Ms Furbert talked about the need to create government policies and programmes to assist the most vulnerable sections of the community.
She described the policies that Bermuda has implemented and what they offer, which includes financial assistance and unemployment benefits.
Ms Furbert’s trip spent $2,977.80 on airfare, $125 for ground transportation, $1,460 on accommodations and $85.13 on food.
David Burt, the Premier and the Minister of Finance, attended the Pre-Joint Ministerial Council in Miami between October 27 and 29.
He met with other British Overseas Territory leaders to prepare for the Joint Ministerial Council Meeting in London.
Topics of discussion included UK/OT relations, financial service, migration and national security, healthcare and climate change.
The trip cost $1,221.83, with $1,087.50 being spent on air travel, $45.01 spent on ground transportation, $40.53 spent on food and $48.79 spent on miscellaneous things.
Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, met with British Airways executives in London between October 23 and 26 during a $6,990.03 trip.
The trip was intended to build stronger partnerships between Bermuda and the airline, which included the opportunity to lower economy fares to make Bermuda a more ideal destination.
Lester Nelson, the chief executive of the Bermuda Airport Authority, and Aaron Adderley, the president of Skyport, joined the minister in these meetings.
On the meeting, Mr Furbert: “The Bermuda and British Airways teams shared data that showed that the direct air service from Heathrow had outperformed the pre-pandemic direct air service from Gatwick.
“However, data also showed there continues to be an opportunity to increase connectivity beyond London Heathrow to Europe and other destinations to the east.
“Further discussions will be held with BA’s destinations partnerships team and the Bermuda Tourism Authority to promote Bermuda in the UK market.”
The three-day trip involved $6,322.91 spent on air travel, $229.37 on ground transportation and $437.75 on accommodation.
