In negativity, hope of salvation shines through

Remember the suffering: Reverend Howard Dill, presiding elder of the AME Church

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus the Christ, I extend to all warmest greetings.

In overviewing our community, it is evident that not everyone is joyful about this season, with the enticement of the pressures of spending more and more, and the realisation that in this island community at one point called “Paradise”, many of our people are really suffering.

As the Government seeks to help folk, many merchants raise their prices, nullifying any chance of reprieve — hence sending them back to square one, deciding between getting medication or food.

It seems that the more that is given, the greater that is taken.

Our reality is that housing is in nowise affordable, as many who have paid off their mortgages years ago continue to support a system that was created to discourage people from owning their own. This, along with other pressures, has contributed to many deciding to migrate elsewhere for better opportunities.

The banks give you interest but take a higher amount for their charge, hence a slow depletion of funds saved. The continual disrespect of life among a group of people has caused shock throughout our community, and has rendered the spirit of fear among many.

In light of all this negativity, there is hope. Hope in God’s plan of salvation for the world. Jesus is that hope. While our situation may not change, He brings hope that brightens days are ahead. The more we truly embrace Him, His principles and instructions, the more capable we are to navigate the challenges of life.

Be encouraged, Bermuda, and work on really loving one another, embracing forgiveness, dissolving greed and selfishness, exhibiting respect for life, and joyfully show forth the power of Jesus the Christ.

With respect and love. Shalom.
