Restaurant proposals sought for Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

Restaurateurs and business people have been invited to submit proposals to operate an eatery at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse.

A notice on the Government’s procurement website said that the Ministry of Public Works planned to lease the facility in Southampton for a minimum period of five years, subject to break and renewal options.

The notice, published online, said the lessee would be required to secure all necessary permissions and consents from the relevant government agencies such as the departments of planning, health and environment for any works at the facility.

It said proposals would be assumed to have been submitted with the potential developer having full knowledge of the property, its condition, statutory requirements and planning status.

The Government recommended that independent professional advice be sought before offers are submitted by the deadline of 3pm on February 12.

A popular eatery — The Dining Room — once operated at the venue, which was previously occupied by a long-established tea room.

Odilio Angeli leased the venue from the Government for 13 years, starting a line of establishments at the site, beginning with The Dining Room, followed by an Indian restaurant, before opening The Landmark last year.

Mr Angeli runs the Bermuda Dining group of restaurants, which includes Rustico in Flatts and Gulfstream in Southampton.

The Dining Room attracted customers from its 2011 opening before it closed in 2017 for major renovations.

Mr Angeli said at the time that he was looking forward to showing off the new-look restaurant and menu after the refurbishment.

However, the restaurant closed its doors during the pandemic after many of its overseas staff returned to their home countries.

Many did not return after the island’s borders reopened.

In 2020, Mr Angeli opened The Tamarind Indian Restaurant at the venue.

Last year, he took another try at the St Anne’s Road site when he opened the Landmark Restaurant — a private party venue that has since closed, despite its popularity with younger people.

Last week, the Government also advertised for tenders for lease of the Harmony Hall railway station in Paget.

A notice published on the procurement website said that since the facility was part of the Railway Trail, applicants were expected to complement the national parks system.

The Government previously put the property up for lease in 2022.

The structure was built in 1931 as part of the former railway line, which went from Hamilton to Somerset and was extended to the East End in 1932.
