Bermuda Police Rugby Club captains Darren Richardson and Ciara Izzie are eagerly anticipating Saturday’s 50th annual Duckett Memorial at Police Field.

The island’s oldest running rugby competition – named after George Duckett, the former Commissioner of Police assassinated in 1972 – starts with the Police women’s team playing against The Rest in three ten-minute periods of non-contact rugby at 2pm.

In what should be an exciting match, the men square off in three 20-minute periods with the Bermuda Rugby Football Union President’s XV at 3pm.

A trophy presentation is scheduled at the end of the two fixtures, with an awards ceremony to be held at the Police Recreation Club to mark the end of the day’s festivities.

Richardson, who led the men to a close 20-19 triumph a year ago, is expecting the Police teams to prevail over their opponents.

“The club is looking forward to another hard-fought, competitive day for both the men’s and the women’s teams as we take on strong select teams,” the men’s captain said.

“Historically, the Police club has achieved good results against the odds in these fixtures, and we hope to continue that trend this year.

“This season, our club has made a concerted effort to focus on bringing the joy back to playing rugby in Bermuda. It has been a season centred on camaraderie, passion and the simple love of the game.

“Days like this remind us of the power of sport to unite, as players, families and supporters from all corners of the island come together to celebrate the sport.

“While training time and numbers have been limited this year, the team’s morale is high, and we are excited about the potential to lift the trophy at the end of it all.

“It is about more than just the win – it is about being part of something special that brings the entire rugby community closer.”

Izzie was part of the women’s side that secured a comfortable 15-5 win. She is excited about getting back into action.

“I am absolutely thrilled to take part in Saturday’s Duckett Memorial match,’’ the women’s team leader said.

“It is such an honour to captain the Police women’s team in an event that brings our rugby community together. Matches like this are not just about competition – they are about camaraderie and celebrating the spirit of the game.”

Adam Richards, the Police chairman, underscored the significance of Saturday’s matches.

“Saturday is a huge day for the Police Rugby Club,” he said. “This year marks the 50th Duckett Memorial event, and it is always well supported.

“The Duckett Memorial provides a fantastic opportunity for Bermuda’s rugby community to get together and celebrate our sport. We look forward to welcoming everyone again this year.

“Police Rugby Club invites serving officers, former colleagues and rugby fans to attend and continue to show their respect by supporting this longstanding sporting tradition.”
